Greg posted a great link to Phil Johnson’s website:

This is a classic article on what the function of the Holy Spirit is. Just as Ed drew attention and focus on Johnny Carson, the Holy Spirit focuses our attention on Christ!

Thanks for that link, Greg.

Stan,

Thanks for drawing attention to the “Christian blogs” section on the right.  I don’t manually post links to new blog entries but instead, the blogs are updated automatically throughout the day.  The list represents what I think are the best Christian blogs out there.  To see all the blog entries for the last week, click “more” at the bottom of the blog box.

Today I was listening to a recording of John MacArthur speak at a Ligonier conference about the holiness of God.  He was a bit chagrined to be speaking on the topic with R.C. Sproul in attendance, a reformed theologian who has dedicated his ministry to exploring the riches of God’s holiness.

MacArthur started out by covering all of the texts in the Old Testament that allude to God’s incomparable holiness.  He made the point that God’s holiness can be fully realized in the person of Jesus, and it was the Holy Spirit who marked Jesus’ ministry on earth as a consummation of God’s holiness.

For instance, the Holy Spirit attended the revealing of Jesus’ birth to Mary (Luke 1:35-38), his baptism (Luke 3:21-22) and the beginning of his ministry (Luke 4:14-15).

Not only was Jesus’ ministry authenticated by a movement of the Holy Spirit, but the ministry of the apostles and the birth of the Christian church at Pentecost were all attended by a movement of God’s Spirit.

It is so reassuring to think that even today, 2000 years later, we are not without a personal God whose Spirit is given to strengthen us and to lead us into truth.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17 ESV

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” John 16:13-14 ESV

Excellent thoughts from John MacArthur.
