Stan,
I am so happy for Marti’s progress, especially the spiritual progress.  I am always reminded when I read things like this that we do have a very awesome God.

I have more exciting news to report on Marti’s progress!

Since her series of strokes started last April 07, she has been practically blind to people’s faces. She has been only able to see the eyes.  For the first time tonight, her eyes were opened where she can now see faces. We had dinner this evening with my folks, and she was able to see them for the first time in over a year, as well as my face. She was so happy. This is a major step to more recovery, and wee are certainly more hopeful than we have been in a long time.

Praise God indeed for not only opening her physical eyes, but her spritual eyes as well.

Soli Deo Gloria!

I have a prayer request for the forum.

I was informed yesterday that one of the best friends I’ve ever had died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 37.  Over the last few years we have drifted apart but I will always consider him one of the closest friends I have ever known.  Please pray that the Lord will comfort all those who are so profoundly stunned and saddened by this loss.  He was not married and had no children but he leaves behind several other family members and friends.

Thanks.

That is awful young as you know.  I will remember his family in my prayers.

Hi Aaron,
I just saw your post.  What a sad day for you and the acquaintances of this young man. Our prayers go out to you and his family.

Hi everyone,

It has been quite some time since I posted an update on Marti’s condition. We have had some very difficult times in recent months. November and December were especially difficult. She got significantly depressed around the holidays, and as a result, her balance and walking became much more difficult.. I am happy to report that she seems back on track and doing somewhat better this month.

When a person is suffering from a chronic condition, it takes a heavy emotional toll not only on the individual who suffers, but also takes a toll on those who take care of her. It is really hard not to get discouraged and depressed.

But we are thankful for the progress.  Sometimes I have wondered what purpose God has for us in this situation. I am even more convinced now than ever, that God is in complete control of these circumstances, and He is working for our good even in these trying times.

There was a recent example of at least some of the purpose that God has for these circumstances.

I have a medical colleague who comes from India, and was brought up Hindu, but then became an atheist. However, she is an avid reader of a variety of books. I had talked to her about CS Lewis in the past. She recently read his classic apologetic on the Christian faith called “Mere Christianity”. She thought the arguments made in the book were so logical and well reasoned.

Last week when I was ending a long 12 hour day, and feeling quite tired and a little discouraged, this colleague picked up the call beeper and patient signouts. I asked her how she was doing. She smiled and excitedly announced that she and her husband had both been baptized recently in a very solid Christian church that they had sent their kids to for quite some time, because it was close by where they lived. She said that not only had Lewis’ book had an impact on her, but she saw the example of several other physicians in our group who are Christians, and she commented on how inspiring it was to see the way that I cared for Marti, and how Marti’s faith also has held up despite the circumstances.

Needless to say, my spirit was lifted up to hear the wonderful news, that God had sovereignly worked in the lives of people who had had no prior exposure to Christianity, but drew them to faith using many different circumstances. Marti was also thrilled to hear this news

This is a prime example of the Reformed view of the gospel, where God does all the work of salvation, and draws all of His sheep, from many different tongues and nations. There is no other explanation for these people being brought to faith, except for the fact that God chose to save them in His own sovereign time and way.

Even if God used Marti’s suffering only in a tangential way as an example to this colleague, then it is worth everything to endure these circumstances. An event like this reminds us that God does indeed work out all things according to His purposes. (Romans 8:28).

Soli Deo Gloria (To God alone be the glory)

I want to join with those who are praying for Stan and Marti today and in the days ahead.

Father, may your name be glorified in all things.  Thank you for Stan and Marti, and for their lives and their testimony and for the lives that are being changed as a result.  We ask in Jesus’ name for full healing and recovery for Marti.  We praise you in all things, even when we don’t understand.  Thank you for your promise that you will be with us until the end.  You have all power in heaven and earth, and you have promised to wipe away all tears.  We look to you in faith and praise you for your everlasting love.

Bob,

Your prayer for us tonight really touched my heart.  Thank you!

Our burdens are lighter when we follow the command of scripture in Galatians 6, to “bear one another’s burdens”, and that is what I have felt during the last 2 years, as so many have lifted us up in prayer.

Stan, I am sorry for the ups and downs Marti has had and you along with her.  I am thankful that your doctor friend has met Jesus Christ and followed Him and that she has seen Jesus in you with your care for Marti.
Father in Heaven, Use this situation with Marti and Stan for Your Honor and Glory.  And may both of them know that you are in charge of all things.
You are awesome God.

Again my friends, I ask for your prayers for our situation with my wife Marti.

Her condition is worsening. She was recently admitted for aspiration pneumonia, which is an ominous sign in her disease. She did recover from the infection which was caused by choking on food. However the toxicity from her pneumonia has weakened her to a great extent.

She may have had another stroke like event.. She is going to be very difficult to take care of as she can barely stand up. I am just hoping and praying that her current caregivers will be able to take care of her when she comes home from the rehab hospital next Tuesday. Her prognosis remains guarded.

God is faithful and I know He has His purposes in all of this, and He continues to sustain us through this time of trial.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers
