“After the gospel has been found effectual in the eternal salvation of untold multitudes, it seems rather late in the day to alter it; and, since it is the revelation of the all-wise and unchanging God, it appears somewhat audacious to attempt its improvement.”

“And so within the simple gospel, how much lies concentrated?  Look at it!  Within that truth lie regeneration, repentance, faith, holiness, zeal, consecration, perfection.  Heaven hides itself away with the gospel.”

“See what vitality the gospel has.  Plunge her under the wave, and she rises, the purer for her washing; thrust her in the fire, and she comes out the more bright for her burning; cut her in sunder, and each piece shall make another church; behead her, and like the Hydra of old, she shall have a hundred heads for every one you cut away.  She cannot die, she must live; for she has the power of God within her.”

“The gospel does not come to us as a premium for virtue, but it presents us with forgiveness for sin.  It is not a reward for health, but a medicine for sickness.”

“No real faith was ever wrought in man by his own thoughts and imaginations; he must receive the gospel as a revelation from God, or he cannot receive it at all.”

“That which is new in theology is not true; the gospel was of full stature at its very birth; no man can add to it or take away from it.”

Greg,

The more I read Spurgeon, the more I am certain that this man was inspired by God in the sense of the gift of New Testament prophecy. This doesn’t mean that Spurgeon was infallible, but like all NT prophets, what they write must be tested by scripture, and Spurgeon comes the closest of any man I have ever read to fitting the criteria.

This quote is excellent:

“The gospel does not come to us as a premium for virtue, but it presents us with forgiveness for sin. It is not a reward for health, but a medicine for sickness.”

“No real faith was ever wrought in man by his own thoughts and imaginations; he must receive the gospel as a revelation from God, or he cannot receive it at all.”

“That which is new in theology is not true; the gospel was of full stature at its very birth; no man can add to it or take away from it.”
-------------------------------------------------------

This speaks right to the heart of the nonsense going on in the American evangelical scene. This covers the “Health and Wealth” gospel, and the Rick Warren like ministries which water down the truth of the gospel.

This covers the so-called new and recycled “open theism” heresy which was brought back into the church by the liberal SDA theologian Richard Rice.

According to Spurgeon, there is nothing new in theology under the Son, but we must stick to the tried, true, and tested gospel of Jesus and the apostles.

As that old gospel song says:

“Give me that old time religion...”

Spurgeon, through his commentaries, introduced great error in Christian eschatology, which has led to an increased fracturing of the Church, espcially via the Baptist related sects of the mid 19th century onwards.

Compare his “teachings” with that of traditional Christianity for 1,500 years and you’ll see how his concepts of multiple raptures, a literal millennium kingdom and forced read of apocalyptic literature is entirely unbiblical.  This has led to great confusion and even a refutation of Jesus’ command to not speculate about end times (Matthew 24).

Here is another classic Spurgeon quote on the gospel:

“I have my own private opinion, that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and him crucified, unless you preach what now-a-days is called Calvinism. I have my own ideas, and those I always state boldly. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism. Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the gospel, if we do not preach justification by faith without works; not unless we preach the sovereignty of God in his dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering love of Jehovah; nor, I think, can we preach the gospel, unless we base it upon the peculiar redemption which Christ made for his elect and chosen people; nor can I comprehend a gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called, and suffers the children of God to be burned in the fires of damnation, after having believed. Such a gospel I abhor. The gospel of the Bible is not such a gospel as that. We preach Christ and him crucified in a different fashion, and to all gainsayers we reply, “We have not so learned Christ.”

No one will accuse Spurgeon of not having any opinions.
