Wisdom for Wealth Builders & Entrepreneurs
One of the great challenges for Christians who are wealth builders and entrepreneurs is looking at how unbelievers (who are also their competition) can build their business or brand with what seems to be so much more “freedom,” leading to more wealth, bigger, and faster. Entrepreneurs who don’t obey the Scriptures or have allegiance to Christ have less accountability, less barriers, and less to worry about. They can cut corners, operate with shady ethics, blow up their marriage, lose relationships with their kids, and lose respect, while still getting what they always wanted: a massive net worth and the satisfaction of having built something! Meanwhile, Christian entrepreneurs and wealth builders might be tempted to look across the aisle with envy or frustration.
It might seem like others are winning, but are they? For unbelievers or even disobedient
Christians who abandon their biblical priorities in the midst of building a business, there will undoubtedly be some initial advantages, but eventually, they will pay the toll fees for the Christless road they’ve traveled.
Even in the ministry, we wrestle with this type of thing. We’re all Christians, and we all love the Lord, but if you ignore your marriage, spend as little time at home as possible, obsess over growth, strategy, and “building it bigger,” you can definitely reach higher heights and win on ministry fronts. Put in enough time pursuing what you want and you’ll eventually get there. The problem is, there will be a cost to that kind of approach — just like in business. That kind of path can result in a weary heart and worn out home.
If you’re a Christian who happens to be an entrepreneur or a wealth builder in your vocation, I want to encourage you with 3 lifestyle tips that will help you win where it matters most! These can apply to anyone, but can be especially helpful for you who are driven, goal-oriented, and can’t help but wake up in the morning with a desire to get better and build things bigger.
1. Date Your Wife
Marriage is the building block of the family, but it’s also a blessing from the LORD to you. Your wife knows you, sees you, and has wisdom for you. God made her to be your “helpmate.” Date nights open the door for deep connection and unleash her ministry to your life.
I can’t tell you how many problems we’ve avoided or not experienced by spending regular, consistent, focused time on our marriage. And I can tell you how conflict in our marriage typically has stemmed from disconnectedness.
Set aside a weekly time to date your wife and engage in meaningful, intentional, transparent, conversation. Talk about life, your marriage, your hearts, what God is teaching you, what you see as the biggest challenges and what you’re celebrating at the biggest victories. This can be a night out, or a night in, but it should not involve your kids. Get a babysitter or drop the kids off at the grandparents and go out, or put the kids to bed and order takeout for a living room date! Your building a business, putting money into your vision, likely investing in the market, trying to build wealth or you’re already there…you can afford the investment into what matters most. But as a
Christian, you can’t afford to lose your marriage. Marriage over money. Period.
2. Plug Into Your Local Church
I’ve been pastoring for 13 years and on this particular subject I have seen enough to know that there are myriad of wealthy, successful, high net worth, busy business types who are still able to keep the local church as a high priority and they are thriving spiritually, not just financially. Do not buy the lie that your involvement in the local church is impossible because you’re a busy entrepreneur. If you’re making that excuse, you’re probably cutting other spiritual corners too like being too busy to pray, too busy to spend time in the Word, and too busy to take a moment out of your day to commune with Christ.
One of the most prominent deceptions that the Devil wants you to believe is that the local church is not worth your attention, time, and commitment. He wants you to build a business, blow up your net worth, crush your goals, explode your investments, and re-charge with plenty of recreation, only to see the church as that place you’ll visit when time allows or the place you’ll give to when you need that tax relief.
For the Christian entrepreneur and wealth builder, the church is not like that DIY project you’ll get to once the most important work matters are in order and you’ve achieved your dreams. It’s the hope of the world, God’s “Plan A,” and a means of grace to strengthen you and keep your feet on the ground.
Serve, give, attend, and get discipled. Those are the real “wealth” builders because they are priceless treasures money can’t buy and this world can’t steal.
3. Get a Mentor for Your Soul
If you’re an entrepreneur or wealth builder, I don’t need to tell you to get a business mentor or seek out coaching for your goals. You’ve likely already watched hours of Alex Hermozi videos, read Extreme Ownership, and if you’re not already cold-plunging you’ve at least entertained splashing your face with ice water from a glass bottle every morning and posting it on Instagram.
But you know what you really need? A mentor for your soul.
Business mentors will help you 10x your net worth, but who’s telling you what you need to hear spiritually? Who is squaring you up and helping you 10x your marriage, parenting, and walk with Christ? Who knows your weaknesses and speaks to them? Who tells you like it is because they love you and want you to not only build a thriving business or increase net worth, but they want you to build a life that honors Christ and causes your wife and children to say: Dad was very successful in a lot of ways and he left me the blessing of financial inheritance, but it was his love for us and his devotion to Christ that blessed me most. Dad left a legacy of faith and taught us to live for what mattered most.
Are you living today for that kind of tomorrow? If not, today is the day to start.
