The Term
Bibliology
(pronounced: bib-lee-AHL-uh-jee)
The Definition
Merriam-Webster (adapted): The study of the Bible, especially its origin, authority, and interpretation.
FTG Expanded Explanation:
Bibliology is the doctrine of Scripture. It addresses what the Bible is, where it came from, and why it carries absolute authority for faith and life. Christians affirm that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and sufficient Word of God. Scripture is not merely a collection of religious writings or moral reflections. It is God’s self-revelation, written by human authors under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Because Scripture comes from God, it is trustworthy, authoritative, and binding on every believer in every area it addresses.
The Biblical Connection
Scripture consistently testifies to its own divine origin, authority, and sufficiency.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
2 Peter 1:20-21 – “…knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
John 17:17 – “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.”
Isaiah 40:8 – “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”
Matthew 5:17-18 – “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”
Bibliology reminds us that Scripture stands above tradition, personal experience, and cultural opinion. God speaks with final authority through His Word.
Used in Everyday Conversation
