de·mon·ol·o·gy | \ ˌdē-mə-ˈnä-lə-jē \
The Definition
Merriam-Webster: The study of demons or evil spirits.
FTG’s Expanded Explanation:
Demonology is the theological study of demons—fallen angels who rebelled against God and now serve Satan’s purposes. They are real, personal, and active in opposing God’s work and deceiving humanity. While our culture often treats demons as fantasy or exaggeration, the Bible treats them as serious spiritual enemies (Ephesians 6:12).
Demons are not equal to God in power or authority. They are created beings who operate under God’s sovereign rule. They can tempt, deceive, and influence—but they cannot possess or control a believer in whom the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Corinthians 6:19; 1 John 4:4).
Studying demonology helps believers understand the nature of spiritual warfare and remain sober-minded. It reminds us of our need for vigilance, discernment, and the armor of God. Most importantly, it points us back to Christ, who has already triumphed over every demonic force (Colossians 2:15).
The Biblical Connection
Ephesians 6:12 – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
Mark 1:34 – “And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.”
James 2:19 – “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.”
1 Peter 5:8 – “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Colossians 2:15 – “When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.”
Throughout Scripture, we see that demons are active in opposing God's kingdom. But we also see the unmatched authority of Christ over them. He commands them, casts them out, and ultimately defeats them. Believers are never called to fear demons, but to resist them by standing firm in the faith (James 4:7).
Used in Everyday Conversation

“A friend of mine was afraid she could be possessed. I told her, ‘If you belong to Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in you. Demons can’t take over what God owns.’”
