The Term
God’s Love
(LUHV)
The Definition
Merriam-Webster: Unselfish, loyal, and benevolent concern for the good of another.
Expanded Explanation: God’s love is the perfect affection and goodness that belong eternally to His nature. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit eternally share love, and God expresses His love toward His creatures through His kindness and care. His love is revealed supremely in sending Jesus Christ to save sinners. Those who trust in Christ are brought into a lasting relationship with God as His beloved children. His love is always consistent with His holiness, so He never approves of sin or acts against what is truly good. He lovingly forgives, corrects, and transforms His people. Christians can rest in His faithful love and reflect it through sacrificial care for others.
The Biblical Connection
1 John 4:7-9 – “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.”
Romans 5:8-9 – “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”
1 John 4:19 – “We love, because He first loved us.”
