The Term
God’s Mercy
(MUR-see)
The Definition
Merriam-Webster: Compassionate treatment of those in distress.
Expanded Explanation: God’s mercy is His compassionate response to human suffering, helplessness, and sin. He cares for those in distress and shows kindness to people who cannot earn or demand His favor. Mercy includes withholding deserved judgment, but it also includes actively helping those in need. Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as compassionate toward the weak, patient with sinners, and ready to receive those who turn to Him. His saving mercy is displayed through Jesus Christ, who bore the punishment for sin so that believers could receive forgiveness without God compromising His justice. Christians depend entirely on His mercy for salvation and are called to extend compassion to others.
The Biblical Connection
Psalm 103:8 – “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.”
Ephesians 2:4-7 – “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
Titus 3:5-7 – “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Used in an Everyday Conversation
“God’s mercy reminds us that we are saved because of His compassion, not because we deserve forgiveness.”
