The Term

“Immutability”

im·mu·ta·bil·i·ty | \ i-ˌmyü-tə-ˈbi-lə-tē \

The Definition

Merriam-Webster: The quality of being unchangeable. The state of being not capable of or susceptible to change.

FTG’s Expanded Explanation:
When we say that God is immutable, we mean that He never changes. He doesn’t shift with time, emotions, circumstances, or cultural trends. His character remains the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He never improves because He’s already perfect. He never declines because He is eternal and holy.

God’s immutability provides incredible comfort. In a world where everything changes—leaders, opinions, laws, and even people’s love—God remains constant. His justice doesn’t soften. His grace doesn’t wear out. His truth doesn’t update. The same God who judged sin in the Old Testament still hates sin today. The same God who offered mercy then offers it now.

This truth doesn’t mean God is emotionless or inactive. He responds to people in real time—but always according to His unchanging nature. His promises are secure because He is. His gospel is reliable because He is.

The Biblical Connection

Malachi 3:6 – “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.”

James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

Psalm 102:25–27 – “They will perish, but you will remain...you are the same, and your years have no end.”

Numbers 23:19 – “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind.”

Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

God’s immutability shows up all throughout Scripture. He never breaks a covenant. He never forgets a promise. From Genesis to Revelation, He remains the holy, just, merciful, and sovereign God.

Used in Everyday Conversation

“Sometimes I feel like everything in life is unstable—my job, my health, even relationships. But I keep reminding myself of God’s immutability. His love is steady. His promises are still good. His faithfulness is my anchor.”

“I’ve been helping someone who’s struggling with doubt. I told him, ‘God’s not like people—He doesn’t flip-flop on His Word or shift with culture. The Bible says He’s immutable. That’s why you can trust Him.’”
